CONNECTING GOD’S WORD TO REAL LIFE

If you need encouragement, you’re in the right place.
Take a seat in my living room, cup of cafe con leche in hand.
Watch the palm branches sway just outside the window and let’s talk.
I’ll remind you that God’s word never fails, and that He has a plan for the exact thing He’s asking you to endure at the moment.
If you need a message of hope today, this is for you. The storm in your life will not be the end of you. You will remain poised, standing, a symbol of God’s strength and stability because— here it is— the same God who created palm trees to withstand the fiercest of storms has also created you.
We try to follow Jesus but we’re clumsy along the way. We find ourselves frazzled and divided, needing more than ever to experience the grace and peace that our hearts are hungry for. But what is grace? What is peace? Take a moment to discover the biblical meaning of grace and peace and to think deeply about what these characteristics tell us about who God is.
Surrendering to God is hard. Why should I live a lifestyle of surrender to God? How do I know if I’m living a surrendered life? Jesus’ words provide a clear definition of surrender to the Father’s will. Here’s a brief reflection on surrender after a weekend retreat with a group of strangers.
If there’s a difference between telling a lie and being a liar, then there’s also a difference between giving thanks and being thankful. Knowing your identity is key. Take your eyes off your circumstances for a moment today and remember that, through the gospel, you’re becoming a person who is marked by thankfulness.
Focusing on everything that’s going wrong comes naturally, but that’s not God’s best for us. Is it possible to fire off different neurons in our brains and change our thought patterns? Let’s look at what the Bible says about God’s will for our lives and discover a key to walking gracefully through the highs and lows.
When words of gratitude seem too basic, what do you do? Sometimes we feel like we have to offer something fancy to God in return for all His goodness toward us, but we’ll be relieved to discover that this isn’t true. Let’s look at what Psalm 100 teaches us about giving thanks.
Cleaning up a potty mess can be an emotionally charged moment for mama! Let’s look at two emotionally heated accounts in the life of Jesus and find a common thread in both. Is there a key to dealing with the stresses and struggles of life?
Often our circumstances prevent us from seeing how God is at work around us. When things are unclear, a veil covers our spiritual eyes and we’re unable to see God. Is it possible to experience the freedom of seeing clearly? Explore what the Bible says about it and be encouraged!
Pressure to be the perfect mom, wife, student, employee or leader is overwhelming. Is God looking for perfection from us? Explore what the Bible says about our efforts to earn God’s favor and remind your heart what you’ve been freed from.
When you reflect on your life, you may notice rhythms of failure and victory, discouragement and hope, forgetting and unforgetting. You and I— I believe our lives are woven with a common thread: we are learning how to remember, how to bring to mind what we’ve previously learned in the moment we need it.
Truthfully, we’ll always be forgetful. We’ll forget to value our loved ones as we should and we’ll forget to respond to hardships with strength and hope. But, we’re in this together. We can embrace the reality of our forgetful nature and meet it with a fierce determination to remember truth.
To grow in the art of unforgetting takes purpose. Forgetfulness, like a seed, produces discouragement, but if you could unforget the right things in the hard moments, hope would flourish instead. Start by reading through one book of the Bible at a time, and take the next year to read one devo from this blog each week (pro tip: set an alarm on your phone for Monday mornings and bookmark this tab on your browser). If life is a journey, what’s our destination and why is the road so difficult? Psalm 84 helps us to identify where we’re going, and it leads us to acknowledge the travel conditions on the journey, even the unfavorable ones.
